OUR DYES

The Speakman Sisters use all natural dyes made from flowers, leaves, roots, berries, barks & extracts. We forage for & grow many of our dye ingredients.
Natural dyes can fade with excessive washing or direct sunlight. We rinse every yarn as much as possible before winding & shipping. We also set dyes with vinegar when necessary. Take care to treat your finished projects with love.
Can you tell me more about the dyes you use

We use all natural materials. Leaves, flowers, berries, roots, foods, insects are most of the materials we dye with. We do purchase some of these items through wholesalers and at the supermarket when it is not possible to forage for material. Since we live in New England there is limited time in the year for growing our own plants and foraging for wild ingredients.

Since your dyes are made with botanicals do they wash out or fade?

Yes, they can. Natural dyes are not necessarily forever, in their original color. Over time they will fade and change. This can be a plus. Think of it as your old hat getting a new color just when you were getting sick of that old color :) We recommend you store your hand dyed yarns and knitwear out of direct sun and hand wash in cold water.

What types of fibers do you work with?

At this point we are only working with protein fibers, i.e. wool, alpaca, silk, cashmere, etc. Cellulose yarns (plant fibers like cotton, linen, hemp) take longer to prep for dyeing.

Do you have a return or exchange policy?

We've thought a lot about this. Sales are final, but you can exchange. If you have received a yarn and not satisfied with the color or texture, please let us know ASAP. We are willing to work with you to find something that will work for you. Do not wait too long to contact us. We will not accept any exchanges after 2 weeks from purchase. Only whole skeins are allowed on exchanges.
